Thank you so much for your post, Evan! It really means a lot that our voices are reaching far and wide, even if right now that is limited to the Macalester community. I hope to expand our reach, and your suggestion of contacting news publications is brilliant. I will be certain to pass along the suggestion to my peers who are currently organizing on-campus...activities (stagings/protests/petitions). That is devastating to hear that this is merely one instance in a long line of many firings in the THDA department. I agree with you that this history is telling of Macalester's misguided priorities regarding the arts, and also newsworthy. I see that you joined the Facebook group, so please feel free to also comment there with other ideas and thoughts! We welcome you.

Hello, friends of Lara.

I heard about this a few days ago, and it saddens me deeply. Both because I admire Lara and because it is the latest in an astonishingly lengthy series of decisions by Macalester firing history/lit faculty in the theatre and dance department. I encourage those of you fighting for her to learn about the big picture here. Other than Harry Waters Jr., every tenure track faculty member hired by the theatre and dance department in the past 20 years has been fired. The vitality of that little department and its ability to develop have been seriously undermined as a result.

It is hard to challenge tenure decisions at a private college. The rules, written by the administration, are highly unfavorable to faculty. But student dissatisfaction and bad press will get their attention. If you really want to get their attention, talk to newspapers. Try national press. The story of Lara Nielsen may not be of "public interest", but a long pattern by a leading college of sabotaging arts departments is newsworthy.

Good luck.
